Characteristics

The pores are open and the lumber is easily dressed producing a distinctive and pleasing grain pattern.  It is a hard hardwood with considerable strength and among the heaviest weight of species.   

 

Availability

Abundant in the eastern, mid-western, and southern United States.  There are varieties of species and the lumber is often mixed:  Northern Red Oak, Southern Red Oak, Scarlet Oak, Pin Oak, Black Oak.  Species from the Appalachian Mountains such as Northern Red Oak and Black Oak are noted for their high quality.  

 

Uses

The upper grades of lumber with few defects are often used in the manufacture of case good furniture, table tops, chairs, moulding, and trim work.  The middle grades are used primarily for flooring, fence boards, and frame stock for upholstered furniture.  The lower grades are used for frame stock for upholstered furniture, rustic flooring, fence boards, pallets,
